Professor Ernest W. McDonnell was a faculty member of the History Department at Rutgers University for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He was a scholar of medieval history, authoring "The Beguines and Beghards in Medieval Culture" and "Memorial to Peter Charanis." Professor McDonnell donated his personal library of 8,000 scholarly volumes to the Rutgers University Libraries upon his retirement.
The Medieval Studies collections in the Rutgers University Libraries benefit from the estate of Professor Ernest McDonnell, who passed away in March 1995, leaving close to $700,000 to the Libraries to establish the Ernest McDonnell Medieval Culture Seminar Room in Alexander Library.
