The major in medieval studies requires 30 credits of course work, as follows:

  1. The equivalency of four semesters of study of a language other than English, or one semester of Old English Language and Literature. Students can satisfy this requirement by demonstrating proficiency through test scores, coursework, or a combination of the two.
  2. 6 credits in introductory courses on medieval civilization, chosen from 01:667:281 Medieval Civilization I; 01:667:282 Medieval Civilization II; 01:082:105 Introduction to Art History, Prehistory to 1400; 01:098:241 East Asian Civilizations: Premodern Era; 01:506:271 Jewish History I: Ancient and Medieval
  3. 3 credits in the seminar in Medieval Studies, currently offered as 01:667:481, Senior Seminar in Medieval Studies. Many 400-level courses with a significant focus on the Middle Ages also will satisfy this requirement.
  4. At least 18 credits in six elective courses chosen from approved cognate courses on the Middle Ages offered in affiliated departments. Of the six required elective courses, at least four must be at the 300-level or above. No more than three elective courses may be from any one department.
